Analysis and research
Sections 127 – 131 of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 place a number of analytical obligations on the Sentencing Council. These include:
- Monitoring the operation and effect of its sentencing guidelines;
- Publishing information regarding sentencing practice for the Crown Court and magistrates’ courts;
- The cost of different sentences and their relative effectiveness in preventing re-offending; and
- Resource assessments in respect of any guidelines it produces.
The Council also conducts any social research it thinks is necessary in order to take account of the views of judges, magistrates, victims, witnesses and the general public on any new guidelines it is proposing.
