Dangerous dog offences
The revised definitive guidelines on dangerous dog offences were issued on 17 March 2016 and came into force on 1 July 2016.
The revised guidelines superceded the Council’s earlier definitive guidelines on dangerous dog offences, which came into force on 20 August 2012.
The following offences are covered by the revised definitive guidelines for dangerous dog offences:
- Owner or person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control in any place in England or Wales (whether or not a public place) where death is caused
- Owner or person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control in any place in England or Wales (whether or not a public place) where a person is injured
- Owner or person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control in any place in England or Wales (whether or not a public place) where an assistance dog is injured or killed
- Owner or person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control in any place in England or Wales (whether or not a public place)
- Possession of a prohibited dog/ Breeding, selling, exchanging or advertising a prohibited dog
Consultations
The consultation on the revised guidelines, which reflect the changes brought about by amendments to the Dangerous Dogs Act in 2014, was published on 17 March 2015 and closed on 9 June 2015. There were 70 responses.
The consultation on the original dangerous dog guidelines ran from 15 December 2011 to 8 March 2012 and received 502 responses.
