The Council has a statutory duty to produce a resource assessment for every sentencing guideline we develop.

These assessments help the Council understand the potential consequences of each guideline in terms of the impact it may have on prison, probation and youth justice resources.

The process involves close scrutiny of current sentencing practice, including analysis of how sentences may be affected by guilty plea reductions and consideration of the factors that influence sentences.

We publish resource assessments alongside the draft guidelines we produce for consultation and the definitive guidelines.
