Below is a summary of some of the main statistical publications on crime and justice produced by government departments (mainly produced by the Ministry of Justice, the Home Office and the Office for National Statistics). It should be noted that each of these government departments produce many more publications than those listed below; this list just includes the main statistical publications related to crime and criminal justice specifically.

Criminal Justice Statistics Quarterly
This publication includes statistics on:

  • Out of court disposals (cautions and penalty notices for disorder (PNDs),
  • Remands,
  • Prosecutions,
  • Convictions,
  • Sentencing outcomes (immediate custody, suspended sentence orders, community orders, fines, discharges),
  • Sentence lengths, and
  • Criminal histories of offenders (first time entrants, and previous convictions).
Frequency: quarterly

Main annual publication: covers calendar years and released in mid-May each year

This is the Sentencing Council’s main source of statistical information on sentencing practice in England and Wales. The annual publication includes lots of additional tools, and it is possible to find statistics on sentencing for specific offences, broken down by age group, gender and ethnicity.

 

Women and the Criminal Justice System and Race and the Criminal Justice System
The Women and Race reports are compendium publications, each bringing together a wide range of statistics related to the criminal justice system, broken down by sex and by ethnicity. They include statistics on:

  • Victims of crime,
  • Police activity (stops and searches, and arrests),
  • Out of court disposals,
  • Remands,
  • Prosecutions, convictions and sentencing,
  • Guilty plea rates,
  • Criminal histories,
  • Offenders under supervision in the community (community orders and suspended sentence orders),
  • Licence recalls,
  • Offender learning
  • Prison population,
  • Assaults and self-harming in prison,
  • Re-offending rates, and
  • Practitioners (those working in the criminal justice system).
Frequency: each publication is biennial, and released on alternate years in late November

 

Prison population statistics
This publication provides high level figures on the total prison population and capacity.

Frequency: weekly (every Friday)

Monthly publication: covers the last working Friday of the month and provides further breakdowns by prison establishment

 

Offender Management Statistics Quarterly
This publication includes statistics on:

  • Prison population,
  • Prison receptions,
  • Prison releases,
  • Offenders supervised in the community (those on community orders, suspended sentence orders, pre-release supervision and post-sentence supervision),
  • Offenders commencing community orders and suspended sentence orders, and the requirements included in their orders,
  • Terminations of community orders and suspended sentence orders, and the reasons for the terminations,
  • Licence recalls,
  • Adjudications, and
  • Restricted patients.
Frequency: quarterly

Main annual publication: covers calendar years and released in late April each year

 

Criminal Court Statistics Quarterly
This publication includes statistics on:

  • Court receipts, disposals and outstanding criminal cases,
  • Average waiting times,
  • Average hearing times,
  • Appeals,
  • Reasons for cracked or ineffective trials,
  • Stages at which guilty pleas were entered at the Crown Court,
  • The number of cases heard by each type of judge,
  • Acquittals,
  • Advocate and solicitor representation,
  • Grounds for sending triable either-way cases to the Crown Court,
  • Average number of days from offence to completion,
  • Enforcement of financial penalties, and
  • Jury summonsing and juror utilisation.

Knife and offensive weapon sentencing statistics
This publication covers statistics on offences of possession of or threatening with a knife or offence weapon, including:

  • Cautions and convictions,
  • Sentencing outcomes at court, and
  • Sentence lengths.
Frequency: quarterly

 

Safety in Custody Statistics
This publication includes statistics on:

  • Deaths in prison (including self-inflicted, homicide and natural causes),
  • Self-harm in prison, and
  • Assaults in prison (assaults on staff and on other prisoners).

Main annual publication: covers calendar years and released in late April each year

 

Proven Re-offending Statistics
This publication includes statistics on:

  • Proportion of offenders who re-offend within a given period,
  • Number of re-offences, and
  • Types of offences and outcomes for offenders who re-offend.

Legal Aid Statistics
This publication includes statistics on:

  • Legal aid expenditure,
  • Workload (in volume and value),
  • Legal aid applications and grants,
  • Litigator and Advocate Graduated Fee Schemes,
  • Legal help and Controlled Legal Representation, and
  • Civil legal aid.
Frequency: quarterly

Main annual publication: covers financial years and released in late June each year

 

Civil Justice Statistics Quarterly
This publication includes statistics on:

  • Judicial review cases processed by the High Court,
  • Caseload at the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and High Court,
  • Applications for leave to appeal and results of appeals,
  • The Judiciary – days sat by judge type, court type and region, and,
  • The Magistracy – Justices of the Peace workforce by sex.
Frequency: quarterly (the statistics on court caseload, appeals, days sat by judges and magistracy workforce are published annually in the “Royal Courts of Justice” tables as part of the “January to March” publication, published in early June each year).

 

Youth Justice Statistics
This series of publications includes statistics on children and young people aged 10 to 17, including:

  • Arrests for recorded crime (notifiable offences),
  • Cautions,
  • First time entrants,
  • Proven offences,
  • Sentencing outcomes,
  • The use of remand,
  • The youth custody population, and
  • Behaviour management (Restrictive Physical Intervention, self-harm, assaults, single separation and use of force).
Main annual publication: covers the previous financial years and released in late January each year

 

Justice Data Lab Statistics
This publication includes tailored reports for organisations who have requested re-offending data through the Justice Data Lab.
Frequency: quarterly

 

Crime in England and Wales
This publication includes statistics on:

  • Police recorded crime, and
  • Victims of crime.
Frequency: quarterly

 

Crime outcomes in England and Wales

This publication includes statistics on the different outcomes assigned to offences recorded by the police, such as:

  • Charged/summonsed,
  • Out-of-court,
  • Prosecution prevented or not in the public interest,
  • Evidential difficulties,
  • Investigation complete – no suspect identified, and
  • Action taken by another body/agency.
Frequency: annual, covering the previous financial year, released in late July each year

 

Hate crime statistics
This publication includes statistics on hate crimes and racist incident recorded by the police.
Frequency: annual, covering the previous financial year, released each year in mid-October

 

Crime against businesses
This publication includes statistics from the annual Commercial Victimisation Survey.
Frequency: annual, covering the previous calendar year, released each spring (around early May)

 

Seizures of drugs statistics
This publication includes statistics on seizures of drugs made by local police forces and the UK Border Force.
Frequency: annual, covering the previous financial year, released each November

 

Operation of police powers under the Terrorism Act 2000 statistics
This publication covers statistics relating to the Terrorism Act 2000, including:

  • Arrests,
  • Outcomes, and
  • Stops and searches.
Frequency: quarterly

Main annual publication: covering the last financial year, published annually in mid-June

 

Football-related arrests and banning orders statistics
This publication includes statistics on football-related arrests and banning orders, by club supported.
Frequency: annual, covering the previous football season, released each November

 

Parole Board Annual Report and Accounts
Within the Parole Board’s Annual Report, there are statistics on Parole Board hearings, split by sentence type, review types and outcome (including releases).
Frequency: annual, covering the previous financial year, released in mid-July each year
