Magistrates' Court Sentencing Guidelines

The Magistrates’ Court Sentencing Guidelines (MCSG) cover most of the offences that regularly come before a magistrates’ court that require decisions on allocation or sentence. The MCSG also contains explanatory materials.

The following PDFs include all guidelines in force from 24 April 2017 and overarching guidelines:

Overarching guidelines

The single pdf version of the Magistrates’ Court Sentencing Guidelines is being phased out. The pdf extends to over 450 pages. Keeping it up to date involves a lot of work and has become unmanageable.

The Guidelines are now published primarly in a digital format in the online MCSG and the offline Sentencing Guidelines app, which offers far greater functionality than the pdf and ensures that all users have access to the most up-to-date version. They are no longer being laid out for print so new guidelines follow the format of the digital guidelines.

We are making some improvements to the Sentencing Guidelines app based on feedback we have received. When these improvements have been tested and implemented, we will let users know when the pdf is to be withdrawn.
