The Sentencing Council has published a public consultation on its proposals to introduce a new guideline for the sentencing of burglary offences. The consultation will run for 12 weeks and will close on 4 August 2011. The proposals will bring burglary offences into a single guideline for Crown and magistrates’ courts in order to increase the consistency of sentencing across both courts.

The draft guideline reinforces current sentencing practice and places a renewed emphasis on the impact of burglaries on victims, ensuring that they are of primary concern in the sentencing process.
