The Secretary of State for Justice has announced the appointment of Assistant Commissioner (AC) Nick Ephgrave as the policing member of the Sentencing Council for three years from 26 May 2020.

Appointed AC for Frontline Policing in the Metropolitan Police (Met) in March 2020, Nick Ephgrave previously served as AC for Met Operations and, prior to that, as Chief Constable of Surrey Police. His extensive police career has spanned 30 years and has included a number of senior operational roles. As a Chief Officer, he has national portfolio responsibility for Criminal Justice.

AC Ephgrave’s appointment will bring senior policing expertise to the Council and ensure that the development of sentencing guidelines is informed by current offending trends, the practical challenges faced in bringing offenders to justice and a police perspective on public concerns about particular types of offending.
