CCSS annual 2014 results

This results bulletin presents the findings of the Crown Court Sentencing Survey for sentences passed by the Crown Court in 2014. The presentation of the results focuses on exploring the relationship between the factors taken into account in sentencing and the final sentence imposed, to help improve understanding of the sentencing process.

The bulletin is released by the Sentencing Council for England and Wales and is produced in accordance with arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The data underlying the Crown Court Sentencing Survey publication are available for download here.

Data for 2011, 2012 and 2013 are the same as that published on 25 June 2015. Data for 2014 is the same as that published on 25 June 2015, with the exception of the sexual offences dataset. This has been revised due to an error identified which affected the data on culpability factors for sexual offences.


The Council is very grateful to the Crown Court judges at all Crown Court centres in England and Wales for participating in this survey. Without their dedication, the wealth of data which has been collected over the last four and a half years would not be available. The Council would also like to express its gratitude to the court staff involved in the survey for their patience, cooperation and assistance, especially at times when changes had to be made to the survey and its administration.
