The government has announced that from today magistrates will be able to give unlimited fines to offenders. This follows provisions in the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act coming into effect which remove the £5,000 cap that applied to fines given by magistrates. Fines must still however take into account the financial means of the offender.
